Hi  Smiley

1. Would I need a business license as well as a DBA?

2. Becoming a Sole Proprietor...How? By applying for a BL?

3. What merchant companies have provided good service? was lookin at intuit

I would be sellin a product made from raw materials...the finished product would be put in glass jars or bottle. I would first start selling by way of word of mouth....moving to a web site. Would I need additional permits or licenses for selling an all natural beauty product? If so, what sites or books offer good reading? Huh

Tax Laws.....what good books could I read to learn more?

Thank you so much! Grin

The best thing to do on the Business License part is to check your state and/or local laws and requirements. It depends on the type of service, business, or product. Read all materials very carefully though because they will try to word it in a way to make you think you require something that perhaps you might not.

Like for instance with what I do with the first business I set up, I did not specifically need a "license" to set up the business, while many people saw it fit to remind me numerous times to get one, mainly out of not knowing so I understood their concerns. Reading the fine print saved me a lot of headache and some money and paperwork. I then took the DBA certificate to a bank who knew what they were doing and just set up a sole-proprietor account. The paperwork required would depend on the type of business entity you set up.

DBA is "Doing Business As" so if you are doing business under another name not specifically your own, then you would need a DBA certificate. Here where I live, I just went to the courthouse and filed it. The clerk checked to make sure the name wasn't taken in this state and I paid $25...all about 7-10 minutes tops--that's it. Some states have different procedures...again, check your area. Some may require public notice etc.

To be honest, just reading their terminology and having my Law Dictionary nearby helps me. Start with reading your state's Health and Safety Code. Or call the health department or something. If you are dealing with cosmetics or skin products/beauty products they can tell you where to start. Maybe even consider the FDA site for their "code".
