I am currently researching the law on copyright usage.  I want to use snippets of a program from a television show in creating a product on my website.  Can someone elucidate on my rights to create a product in which I use (for example) a snippet from CNN to be used in a manual I am creating.

Thanks in advance

I would think you would need permission to use others' video(s) - snippet or not.

What if the video can be freely searched for and found under archived video.  I can use a hyperlink, but I am thinking about over time the archival footage may change.  So wouldn't I be able to post the video freely even after the archival footage  has disappeared into the ether. (hopefully this isn't too confusing)

Thanks,

Are you going to sell the finished product?

For example in the music business:

I can sample someone's work but I must get it cleared ( pay them too) from the publisher if I plan on selling it, posting it, etc.

As far as news clips it's done all the time on the web (mediatakout) but they always credit the source.

If you can find that video for free on the Inter-net you don't have to pay. If not (meaning you can't find it for free), you must contact the producer to arrange royalties or perhaps just to get an okay from them to use the video (to give attention to the video, hell, it may have lacked getting attention).
