Recently hailed by some sections of the media as the, ‘brain pacemaker for depression', deep brain stimulation continues to show promising results in people with depression who are otherwise treatment-resistive. Such patients will almost inevitably have tried a variety of medications, alone or in combination, and electroconvulsive therapy with little or no therapeutic effect. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of people with depression fail to respond to standard treatments.

 

The search for a single brain region or neurological system to explain depression has not been fruitful. Research has instead focused more on depression as a disorder that involves different areas of the brain and different neurotransmitters. Functional neuroimaging  studies have had an important role in identifying pathways that may be involved in depression. Studies have shown one area of the brain known as the subgenual cingulate region (Brodmann area 25) as having an active role in acute sadness, depression and the antidepressant treatment effects.

 

It is estimated that over 40,000 people worldwide achieve symptom relief from Parkinson's disease as a direct result of deep brain stimulation. Parkinson's sufferers have an electrode positioned in an area of the brain known as the thalamus. A tiny electrical pulse that can be varied according to need is then sent down a cable usually located just beneath the clavicle (collar bone). This results in a disruption of overactive cells that would normally result in tremors.

 

In one study into the effects of the surgical procedure on depression, Helen S. Mayberg, M.D., professor of psychiatry neurology of the University of Toronto, reports patients spontaneously experiencing, "sudden calmness or lightness," "disappearance of the void," a sense of "connectedness" and sudden brightening of the room, including a description of the sharpening of visual details and intensification of colors (p.652).

 

Not all patients respond to deep brain stimulation and so far the technique remains in a very experimental stage. Dr Helen Mayberg of Emory University has implanted approximately 50 depression patients. She estimates that four out every six show sufficient improvement to be regarded as responsive to treatment.

 

The mechanisms and action of deep brain stimulation remain something of a mystery. However, what is known is that stimulation produces a positive and often marked clinical effect in terms of depression relief. More investigation is needed to establish whether all people with treatment-resistive depression are candidates for deep brain stimulation.

 

The technique itself is invasive and not without the associated risks of internal bleeding or infection. Furthermore, as not all patients respond positively, it may mean that screening needs to be established as to which patients should undertake the risk of surgery, or it may mean that other areas of the brain need targeting.

Hmph! It didn't take me long to find out. I had a psychiatrist try to give me 2 different psychotropic medicines and the side effects were diabetes and liver cancer. WTF?!?! I told her, "Lady, if that's all you got for me I'll just have to stay crazy", lol.

I'm waiting for my younger brother to get out of the psych ward.  He's been there since he was 14, now 28.  That's half his life.  He's very powerful!  He's kept it a secret though, but I always knew there was something special about him.  I pried him with questions recently when I realized it's uncommon for people to see others while they are astral projecting.  He saw me when he was 9 y/o as I was having an obe and also had visitations from higher beings.  Anyway, when he was 14 he smoked something he wasn't supposed to smoke and it messed him up big time!  It really opened up his mind and all kinds of stuff was getting through to him.  I plan on giving him the detox of his LIFE once he is released.

Yes you must treat people with mental problems like a stick of dynamite. That's exactly what it's like when you're on the edge. My parents forbid me to go back to my normal life after I got out of a psychiatric hospital and it was the best thing they could've done. I would've gotten into even more trouble had I went back to living on my own. they definitely didn't take for granted that i would just be fine. The biggest problem is finding the balance between showing concern and support making the person feel like they're incompetent and can't do anything without you breathing down their necks.

Well, what helped me a lot was that my father isn't ignorant about alternative healing modalities. My parents are also open to the idea that maybe what was going on with me was more spiritual than mental. They were open to the fact that maybe I had accessed a higher realm and just didn't know how to handle it.  Support more than anything else is what people need to get over whatever mental problems they're having. I still hear voices, but it's not nearly as prevalent as it was before. I also changed my diet and started doing things to raise my vibrations like yoga and meditation. Also making sure you get trace minerals in your diets is important too. St. John's wort and chamomile tea are good for whenever I feel overly stimulated mentally. Right after I had a manic episode I started making a drink with goji juice, pomegranate juice, noni juice, and green tea. I don't know what it is about that combo, but I would be feeling great.

You're welcome love! The voice I would hear would be my voice, but it wasn't me...get it? Whatever the source of the voice, it was accurate with all the info that it told me. Thus far a lot of things I was told by this voice and most of the visions I had while having that "breakdown" have come to pass. It was telling me that I was special and that I would help a lot of people. It also showed me some of my future associations, most of them are people who are famous. The visions that I had were amazing! I had one where I saw a map of the US, like a weather map and in the West there were forest fires everywhere and in the Midwest there were hundreds of tornados. That same year, 2008, there were a whole lot more forest fires and tornados that year. I had a dream during the same time period that I was in space and I saw this really intense and brightly shining star. Then from out of nowhere there star exploded and gave off the intense white and orange light. The next day this was on the news:

I'm not sure what happened to my post before.     However, I thank you both for the advice on dealing with my brother.  He is a very difficult person to handle, but I understand him and tend to not rile him up like everyone else.  I'm sure as the time gets closer, I will know how to help him.  I was actually told that this will be revealed to me.  I don't think he has been able to handle the voices very well.

Soul Beautiful... this is beautiful.  I know how you feel though.  After I had an intense kundalini experience one night, which occurred after my first attempt of going vegan in November, I became more sensitive and began feeling all sorts of intense ascension symptoms.  This included a period of a few days when my consciousness was pretty open.  I was getting all sorts of information; however, I did not hear voices.  I was actually able to confirm that much of this information was correct.  It was coming in very quickly and was very uncontrollable to the point where it started to drive me crazy.  If I had to go through it alone I think I would have probably ended up in a mental hospital.  It was through my incredible support system who actually wasn't available during that time, but left me with enough information over a period of a month, to get through it.  I just had to change my way of thinking.  What was happening to me was positive.  I kept saying that things I was going through was crazy, so that's exactly what started to happen.  Then a negative entity began actually feeding off of my energy and I began "getting incorrect information."  I had to stop, think positively and stand up to the negative entity for things to turn back around.  Things were so crazy that I began seeing purple visions and eventually everything became purple... I say crazy because I actually believed that this was something negative trying to come through... lol.  My mom had always associated the color purple with death, and I was also seeing visions of what appeared to be negative entities.  One tried to attack me in a lucid dream until I laughed at it and told it that it was unable to harm me.  That's when I truly felt positive and powerful, when I came to a complete KNOWING that these things have no power over me.

I think I am more ready now, but would like to build myself to a higher place mentally.

It seems like we went through very similar experiences. It seems like the only difference was that I heard voices and you did not and I was alone and you weren't. I wish that voice would come back to being strong like it was before, lol. It's good that you didn't go crazy like I did and that you weren't alone. Before it was all over I was running down the street wearing nothing but a dashiki and some panties begging God for peace.  I think I had a kundalini experience a month prior to my "breakdown" after doing yoga that left me open to negative entities. I was laying down on my mat meditating after I finished my yoga postures. After a few minutes I felt this surge of energy that started from my feet and it shot all the up to the top of my head. Then my body started vibrating violently and my entire body with the exception of my  head and feet lifted off the ground. This went on for about 10 minutes. After it was over I went to the bathroom and I looked in the mirror and then I heard a voice tell me "Why the fuck you always lookin' in the mirror?! What you lookin' for?!" I was so spooked it took me hours to go to sleep. I wish I would've been able to have the presence of mind to tell it to fuck off or something, lol. But I wasn't as deep into spirituality back then as I am now.

I was wondering where you went.  I hope all is well.

The Dherbs PWC got me all opened up and stuff... lol.  I'm learning that I'm more of a feeler than a seer, but I'm working on all of my skills, except one (kinda creeps me out).  I may work on it though in the future... don't know yet.  I met up with another major catalyst who has been very instrumental in my growth in the very short amount of time I've known him.  I'm at the point where I'm able to communicate more accurately with my angels through feeling alone.  I'm already long gone... I'm climbing deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.  I have no intentions of stopping.
