So a person on another site asked an interesting question about the upcoming census...

"The 2010 US Census will allow West Indian Caribbean communities to identify their nationality as their race, which will lower the African American population. What are your feelings about this?"

One person responded (essentially) that since West Indian is not a race, it does not matter what I am called  just what I respond to...another person asked (my paraphrase again)  what does this mean overall  (I guess they are asking even though it is a new category will they still be considered Black) and how will it affect funding and district lines and such...

Then on the census website it says...
•The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years.
•The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
•The next census is in 2010.
•Your participation in the census is required by law.
•It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
•Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census.
•Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.

My questions are:  What do you think this means for the african-american community (if anything)?  Do you think they are trying to get a more accurate count of all the ethnic groups and their origins, trying to be more culturally sensitive, or trying to separate other groups from the traditional african-american label for other purposes?

I remember as a child right before the 1990 census my mother saying it was just a way to count black people, sounds like she wasn't completely off base.

I agree.  I think they are trying to separate other groups from the traditional african-american labels for other purposes.
