men with braids
« on: April 11, 2009, 09:25:15 PM »

black american men are receiving flack from whites and africans for wearing braids. whites say its stupid and unprofessioal and africans say its feminine. one white guy said african american men deserve not to get hired of they wear braids.

sometimes i truly believe other groups just envy blaack american creativity thats why they critique it. i mean what about hippies, people who wear  mohawks and goths?

I don't know where brothas rocking braids started from...however on other things of creativity.. we are not this western way of life.  As far as creativity and natural expression you have to DO 100% your own thing  or play the spook that sat by the door.  Mind you i could be limited in my view living in america i've only lived in the midwest and south.

That's funny. I didn't hear this complaint when Stevie Wonder had his braids with beads. *shrug*

I think Nay-Nay has a point in regards to who sets the agenda for fashion, style and other forms of expression. If whites weren't jealous, why then do they look to mimic EVERY form of cultural expression we create? Be it Bo Derek's braids, locking their hair or even language, whites have always played "follow the leader". What they call "stupid" and "unprofessional", they will look for ways to build an economic fortune from it.

I think it's stupid to go by what society controllers deem "stupid" and live by it. I could care less they see braids and locs as "unprofessional" as in they are the sole authority(respecting the corporate world) of all universal things.  Most people nowadays go with locs not mostly cuz of rebellion but cuz of fads.  Almost everybody who got locs now tryna look like lil wayne lol.

I trip when I hear white newscasters on the news talking about "My bad" when they make an error or mistake; or, "It's all good!" as I heard a weatherman say. It's amazing how so-called ghetto or street language makes its way all the way up the corporate and social ladder. I be like: Black people just really don't have a clue of how powerful they really are. Black people created this language and you hear it everywhere, even in the upper echelons of society. Black people are unconscious trend setters but they lack how to keep what they possess. Others will end up making money off their creations, but Blacks will keep on creating new creations.

Yes! And they're still sagging them! So now they have their asses hanging out of some tight jeans w/ a ponytail and some baby hair slicked down w/ a baby tee on! Huh Roll Eyes

This guy had the nerve to walk up to me in target tryna resolve a dispute w/ his friends about this new style. Asked me my opinion on it. I told him it's not only unattractive, but it makes you look gay. I was talking to a wall....his response was "that's only one female!" Okay that was a little off topic.

I would like to know where the line is drawn? If it's okay for men to wear braids and beads, how about blow-outs and perms? Is that too much or acceptable as well?

I feel you on the notty locs too! Be a lil rugged w/ it! I've read somewhere that physically, a woman has her beauty and a man has his strength as an attraction to the opposite sex. Now men are using their beauty! LMAO

There is no longer a balance in our society (yin & yang) between men and women.  Society is constantly trying to push males into being feminine and those that don't embrace their masculinity will always fall for it.  I don't particularly care for the slick down dred - feminine look either.  Oh and as far as the guy and the question to horuset, hell one real woman's opinion should have been enough!
