Is there a thing such as "vegan" nori rolls?  I was preparing to make my own nori rolls, bought a pack of organic, untoasted sheets, opened it up, and it literally smells fishy.  I know, I know... duhhh.. it's seaweed and it comes from the sea, hence the smell.  But I just can't get past the fish smell, plus I'm vegan.  I'm wondering if there are any companies that claim to sell vegan nori sheets and if so, what are the chances that they really do not contain fish.

sooooo glad you brought this up.

i use nori sheets when making sushi and it does remind me of fish.

the emerald cove brand is what i use. the packaging states that it's an organic pacific sushi nori an edible ocean plant. seeing the bolded parts convinced me that it was safe.

but i feel you on the fish thing. check this link to see more on this http://www.giveittomeraw.com/forum/topic/show?id=1407416%3ATopic%3A160020

Hey I see what you mean, I had some roasted Nori sheets, they taste sea like. But dang don't fish eat seaweed? Sometimes we take it overboard, lol.

i feel you BUT check the following...

"I actually remember reading somewhere once that nori can contain something like up to 20 percent fish without being labeled."

that was a quote from the site that i provided above. now, i don't know if this is true or not but it doesn't cost me anything to find out what's in the food i'm consuming.

No doubt sis, I checked the link earlier when I was looking through. It is interesting though that the dulse seaweed, and all others I have tasted all have that sea taste, maybe people are related the sea environmental taste with fish, because they live in this environment. Aside from that though, were you able to find out about it?

The Nori I had didn't seem like it had any fishlike texture unless it was grounded up on purpose and secretly sprinkled on there, lol, that would be interesting if they did that!

i didn't think the nori had a fishlike texture. i just thought it tasted fishy but of course it would because of its environment.

yeah, i found a bit of info.

FISH IN YOUR NORI
by Jeremy Safron (www.lovingfoods.com)

Nori (the sea vegetable) grows as a lettuce in the ocean.

It is harvested often in big nets and with it many fish are scooped up. This combination of seaweed, shrimp, crabs, snails, barnacles, and small fish are all ground up and made into sheets (like paper)

In the large industry they do not take the time to remove these sea animals. Most of the nori in the world comes from Japan.

The two main suppliers Nagata and Yamamoto (who supply most of the smaller companies) claim that the animal contamination is minimal.

Any contamination is unacceptable. Some smaller companies
(including a kosher certified kibbutz in Israel) are beginning to offer fish free nori. So be aware

and some comments on this page mentioned the fish/nori connection

ever since i found out that small fish get caught in standard nori sheets , ive been put off, i stuck to dulse or seaweed at the beach. but when i discovered these bad boys, nori was back on the menu! you can chop em up and add them to a salad or go the traditional way and roll em up with grated carrot, coconut, avocado, cauliflower or a nut pate. what ever you fancy....

Nori sheets are so versatile so I had to try this product, truely raw and truely vegan nori sheets are something hard to find, poor fish! These are great for their valuable raw nutrients and enzymes not to mention making meals more creative and fun.

it seems to be something that raw vegans are very vocal about
