In my opinion, its just another level of your consciousness that psychologists say is "below" your regular consciousness. In ancient texts they referred to an aspect of the subconscious as the underworld. The subconscious is powerful and if people can "tap" into they can really get some good stuff, because usually its responsible for manifesting things on this plane.

lol. I'm working on it too. I've begun my venture into the dark sciences, but I would say meditation, trance states, different states of consciousness.
