›› More: News More: Audio Articles QUESTION OF THE DAY![]() First of all I just wanted to thank you so much for enlightening me. I have become a devoted reader daily, for the last 6 months. I have become vegetarian and almost vegan. I eat very little dairy by products such as salad dressing ect. I personally want to thank you for the knowledge that you have shared with us. I had my gallbladder removed about 16 years ago, and I was reading the article on High Cholesterol, and I have a question. Since I do not have a storage place for stomach bile. What dangers can come about with the bile just circulating in my body? When I was unconscious I never though about not having my gallbladder. The doctor said you have gallstones, and you need your gallbladder taken out. I did not ask any questions, due to my ignorance and enormous cramp like pains. At times, I wonder if the bile which has an acid taste is eating away at my organs. Please forgive my ignorance, but my mind wonders. So is there a herb that I can take that will do what my lack of gallbladder should do?

Spicy Cucumber Chutney
Ingredients:
Directions: I simply washed, then cut my cucumber into 2 pieces (easier to handle), then I grated with my box grater. Use the side which gives you that sort of shredded finish. After grating I placed the now shredded cucumber into a strainer and squeezed out as much of the liquid as I could. I then placed it back into a bowl and prepared the other ingredients. I gave the garlic, shado beni and scotch bonnet pepper a rough chop so it would be easier to puree. You can use a Magi Bullet as I did, a food processor, a blender or just use your knife to give this a really fine chop. Additionally you can also use a mortar and pestle. In my magic bullet I squeezed the juice of the lemon, added the salt, black pepper and rough chopped – shado beni, garlic and scotch bonnet pepper. I started with a few quick pulses, then I let it run until I had a fine puree. The scent of the lemon juice, with the garlic, shado beni and scotch bonnet pepper will be divine and cause your mouth to start springing juices (you know what I mean). The final step is to assemble everything. Pour the pepper puree into the same bowl where you have the shredded cucumber and give it a good mix. The idea is to marry all the flavours so you have a nice spicy cucumber chutney. Allow this to marinate in the fridge for a couple hours and you’re good to go. This spicy cucumber chutney will last in the fridge for at least a week and goes well with anything you normally eat spicy condiments with..even your scrambled eggs at breakfast. Do remember to taste for salt.. the idea is to have a mellow/well-rounded undertone and have the shredded cucumber absorb the goodness of the garlic, shado beni and heat from the pepper. Notes: To kick this up a bit, you can add a dash of cumin (geera). I used a scotch bonnet pepper, but you’re free to use a habanero and any hot pepper you may have or like using. If you don’t have shado beni, feel free to use 3 tablespoons of freshly chopped cilantro (coriander). I used the entire pepper (seeds and all), but if you’re overly concerned about excessive heat, don’t include the seeds.

I recently started a baking and cake decorating course and I would like to know if you know of any alternative products besides egg replacer for cakes? I find it is no good if having to make cakes where the sugar and egg have to be creamed together. I am also concerned about having to use icing sugar as I assume it is all made from white sugar. Do you know of a healthier alternative to icing sugar for making icing an fondant? Here are a few things you can use to replace egg in vegan recipes: Flax Seeds and Water: This mixture works well as a binder in pancakes and breads/muffins, but it does has a distict "flaxseed" or "nutty" flavor. Be sure to grind the seeds into a meal before mixing in a food processor or blender with the water-blend until this resembles a thick milkshake (1/3 cup flax seeds, ground plus 1 cup water equals 6 eggs). This will last, if refrigerated, for 3-5 days. Mashed or Blended Banana: Bananas are great substitutes for eggs in any sweet baking recipe or pancakes. (1/2 of a banana, mashed, equals 1 egg). Applesauce: As with the banana, use in your "sweet" baking recipes. (3 tablespoons equals 1 egg.) Soft Silken Tofu: Make sure to use the "Soft" and "Silken" variety to avoid any gritty bits in your baked goodie. Also, you must use a blender or food processor to get the tofu totally smooth before adding it to your creation. (1/4 cup soft silken tofu, smooth, equals 1 egg). Experiment, try each of these in your baking as a replacement for eggs. Figure out which one(s) work best and give you the tastiest results. You and our planet will be healthier every time you replace an egg with a vegan substitute. And the chickens will love you for it! I wish you success and delicious treats on your path to becoming a kind and compassionate baker. As for icing, I love to use ripe avocados and agave when making chocolate frosting. The chocolate completely masks the avocado flavor and you are left with a smooth, creamy, chocolate miracle.
Best of luck,

First of all, let me just say that what I write here is not advice to you or anyone else, I am not a dermatologist, and the choices I make are for my own body, and I respect what other people do with theirs. With that out of the way, I will share with you why I don't use sunscreen — and how there's plenty of real scientific evidence to back up my choices. Check out the Environmental Working Group's 2012 report, which just came out. Plenty of the evidence they have compiled shows that sunscreen might not protect us as well as we think, and in some cases, might even be harmful. I've broken some of the info down here, and will then explain what I do to avoid burns and skin cancer. (The quotes below are all according to the report.) Sunscreen prevents burns but may not prevent cancer: "... a wide range of public health agencies — including the FDA — have found very little evidence that sunscreen prevents most types of skin cancer." In reviewing the evidence, the FDA said that the available clinical studies “do not demonstrate that even [broad spectrum products with SPF greater than 15] alone reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.” Sunscreen use has been linked to more malignant skin cancers: "Some researchers have detected an increased risk of melanoma among sunscreen users. No one knows the cause, but scientists speculate that sunscreen users stay out in the sun longer and absorb more radiation overall, or that free radicals released as sunscreen chemicals break down in sunlight may play a role." How many people do you know say they're "fine in the sun" since they put on SPF 75? Continue reading: Click Here SOURCE - Starre Vartan
![]() A popular antibiotic used for treating bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and sexually transmitted diseases may boost the risk of death, a U.S. study said Wednesday. Azithromycin has been on the worldwide market since the 1980s, but the study in the New England Journal of Medicine is the first to document serious heart risks — up to a 2.5-fold higher chance of cardiovascular fatalities — in the first five days of treatment compared to another or no antibiotic. The comparison was based on an examination of patient records in Tennessee from 1992 to 2006. Researchers at Vanderbilt University compared about 348,000 prescriptions of azithromycin to millions of records from people who were not treated with any antibiotics or who received amoxicillin, a similar medication that is considered heart safe. The analysis found there were 47 more deaths per million in those taking azithromycin compared to those on amoxicillin. When researchers examined patients already at high risk for heart problems, the chance increased to 245 additional cardiovascular deaths per million in the azithromycin group compared to the amoxicillin takers. While the relative number of fatalities was low, researchers said the findings offer new information about possible dangers that doctors and patients should consider. "We believe this study adds important information on the risk profile for azithromycin," said lead author Wayne Ray, professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University. "For patients with elevated cardiovascular risk and infections for which there are alternative antibiotics, the cardiovascular effects of azithromycin may be an important clinical consideration." ![]() 12 Uses for Wire Hangers If you’re anything like Joan Crawford, you really, really, don’t like wire hangers, at least for their intended purpose! But, as much as you’d prefer plastic or wooden hangers, there always seem to be some wire ones around. You can try to take them back to the dry cleaners, sure, but you can also use them for one of the following clever tricks. Read on to discover some awesome ways to reuse wire hangers! Home & Garden 1. Unclog Drains. Use a straightened-out hanger as a quick fix to remove unwanted hairballs from your drain. 2. Pick Locks. Now, we’re not advocating anything illegal here! But if you lock your keys in your (old model) car, poke a straightened-out hanger into the lock and try to jimmy it open. This won’t work on newer cars, though. 3. Get Things Out of Small Spaces. My favorite kitchen knife recently fell in the tiny crack between the stove and the cabinet. I was stumped about how to get it out without, you know, accidentally stabbing myself, until I realized that a wire hanger was just the thing I needed. I flattened it out until it was as long as possible, keeping the hook in place. With just the right amount of graceful movement, my beloved knife was back again! 4. Clean off Wax from Candlesticks. Wire hangers are a great way to get out that pesky gunk. 5. Stake Plants. Use a flattened hanger to give a boost to plants in need. Continue reading: Click Here SOURCE - Katie Waldeck |
