QUESTION OF THE DAY

I have a question concerning low white cell blood count in a 13 year old male. My doctor diagnosed my son's white blood count at a 3 but that the so-called normal is from 4-11. I would like some information concerning this. Thank you for your help. I will await your answer.

Just nourish the child's blood with Vitamin C Extract and Iron Extract. Build the child's blood (over a 3 month period) and then go back for another check-up.

Help For Women With Fibroids

Wise Woman herbal and home remedies are simple, safe ways to help yourself when you have a diagnosis of uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids are solid muscle tissue growths in the uterus. They are also called fibroid tumors, myomas, or leiomyomas. Fibroids occur so frequently (in up to half of all women over forty) that they could be considered a normal irregularity. The occasional fibroid can become enormous (medical literature reports one that was 100 pounds!), but the majority (80%) remain as small as a walnut.

Fibroids are the number one reason American women have hysterectomies.

The causes of uterine fibroids are unknown, but estrogens, especially estradiol, promote their growth. After menopause fibroids disappear. But because estrogen levels can rise during the early menopausal years, previously asymptomatic fibroids may grow in the years just before the cessation of menses, resulting in symptoms such as feeling of heaviness in the belly, low back pain, pain with vaginal penetration, urinary frequency or incontinence, bowel difficulties, or severe menstrual pain and flooding.

Women of color are three to nine times more likely to have fibroids than white women, and theirs will grow more quickly.

Fibroid tumors are not cancer, not malignant. Tumor means a swelling or a growth, not a malignancy, not cancer. Less than 0.1% of all uterine fibroids are malignant.

Small fibroids often disappear spontaneously. Larger fibroids are more difficult to resolve, but not impossible to control with natural measures.

  • The "root chakra" (lowermost energy center in the body, which includes the uterus) said to store unexpressed anger. It is believed that any unwanted growths in these organs can be countered by allowing the anger to safely discharge.
  • One woman's fibroids (and menstrual cramps) disappeared within three months of beginning a vigorous exercise program. Exercise helps insure regular ovulation, and irregular ovulation seems to worsen fibroids.
  • Consuming three or more servings of whole grains or beans daily not only reduces the size of fibroids but offers protection from breast and endometrial cancers as well.
  • Red clover flowers (Trifolium pratense), are one of my favorite infusions, but use during the menopausal years may increase difficulty with fibroids.
  • Strengthening the liver with herbs such as dandelion, milk thistle seed, or yellow dock root helps it metabolize estrogen out of the body, thus reducing fibroids.
  • Vitex or chasteberry tincture, 25-30 drops two to four times daily, often shrinks small fibroids within two months. But results come from long-term use - up to two years.
  • Ask someone to burn moxa over the area of the fibroid while you envision the heat releasing the treasures in your uterus. What is locked up in this fibroid? What can you give birth to?
  • Acupuncture treatments can shrink fibroids.
  • Poke root (Phytolacca americana), used internally as a tincture (1-10 drops per day; start small) and externally as a belly rub oil, has gained a reputation as a profound helper in relieving pain and distresses from fibroids. CAUTION: Poke is considered poisonous; it is not often found for sale. This is one remedy you may have to make yourself to try.
  • Warm castor oil packs on the belly, or ginger compresses (soak a towel in hot ginger water) relieve pain and help shrink the fibroids.

ASK THE AMAZING CLARKS

I am a 65 year old man and in good overall health. Until about 4 months ago when I had a Metal Alloy Maryland Bridge installed. Now I always have a metal taste in my mouth and I need to chew gum during the day to cover up the taste. I am also getting sores on my inner cheek especially on the side of the metal however, there is no swelling or redness around the bridge. My dentist insists the metal is not causing sores and inflammation of cheeks. What do you think?

There are several possibilities that can explain your situation. First we need to know what metals were mixed together to make the framework for your bridge. And then we need to know if you have any other metals in your mouth. If you do, I could explain the problem easily.

And that would go like this: Your saliva acts similar to saline solution. When you have dissimilar metals in a saline solution you can get a galvanic reaction. This could explain your metallic taste. You may also be allergic to the metal or even the porcelain that is baked to the metal framework and that could be the reason for your mouth sores. It is also possible that the sores are caused by your lips catching on the porcelain causing a rub burn of sorts.

And then again it may not be that simple. Do you take any medications? Some drugs or combination of drugs can cause a metallic taste. There are acidic foods that could react to the metal and give you the metallic taste. Some diseases can cause a burning sensation in your mouth. And finally, if you have generalized or even localized gum disease you could get a metallic taste from the necrotic breakdown of your gum tissue. This was termed trench mouth years ago.

Again, I would have to examine your mouth and ask you many questions. There has to be an explanation. And I would investigate all the above possibilities. I would love to hear back from you.

Dr. Dian Olah

FACTS AND TRIVIA

“Hello” didn’t exist until 1833 and was popularized by Edison as a telephone greeting. Alexander Graham bell would have preferred “Ahoy”.

HEALTH TIP OF THE DAY

Natural Homemade Shampoo

1/4 cup coconut milk (depending on your hair type, homemade may be better for you)
1/3 cup Liquid Castille Soap
1/2 of a teaspoon (or several capsules) of Vitamin E oil
20 drops of Essential Oils of choice
For dry hair: add 1/2 tsp olive or almond oil (optional)

How to Make Natural Shampoo:
Combine all ingredients in an old shampoo bottle or jar of some kind (pump soap dispensers and even foaming dispensers work well for this. If you use a foaming dispenser, add 1/4 cup of distilled water). Shake well to mix. Keep in shower for up to a month. Shake before each use. Use about a teaspoon every time you shampoo. If you use a foaming dispenser, it also makes a great shaving cream- just dilute with 1/4 cup distilled water!

5 New Ways to Avoid the Supermarket

Blossoming local food movement means it's easier than ever to avoid questionable ingredients in typical supermarket foods.

The local food movement is on fire, and farmers and innovative small businesses are making it easier than ever to feed your family without even setting foot in a box store or supermarket. (By staying out of places crammed with packaged foods, you'll be more likely to avoid toxic food additives.)

Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture's Farming for the Future conference in State College, PA, last week was a testament to the snowballing demand for organic. More than 2,000 farmers and foodies forged connections and sought advice on bringing healthy, sustainable food options directly to consumers, often with no middleman required.

Here are 5 unique ways to source local food without crossing the threshold of a supermarket.

Pay-as-You-Go Shares

You've probably heard of community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares, which a customer purchases to share in a farm's harvest before the growing season begins, and then receives fresh produce throughout the farmer's growing season. While this traditional CSA model remains popular throughout the country, it's not a good fit for everyone, particularly farm-food seekers who don't have a lot of extra cash available to pay up front costs, which can start in the hundreds of dollars.

The Rodale Institute, an organic research farm in Pennsylvania, is experimenting with a new, pay-as-you-go program called Agriculture Supported Communities. People commit to purchasing a season's worth of produce, but pay in small weekly amounts, not one large lump sum.

CSAs aren't limited to produce anymore, either. More recently, offerings can include meat, eggs, honey, cheese, and even wine shares.

"People crave a regular reminder that they're supporting a farmer," Worldwatch Institute fellow Brian Halweil, editor of a local food magazine on Long Island, NY, called Edible East End, said at the PASA conference.

Is Your Office Making You Sick?

When you think air pollution, you probably think smokestacks in remote countries—not the furniture in your office, right? Well, get this: Thirty Boston office workers in buildings that were new, recently renovated, or had no recent construction, had perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs—toxic chemicals applied to carpets and furniture to repel stains and dirt—in their blood samples, a recent study finds.

Workers who spent their time in new buildings showed the highest levels of the chemicals, and each added hour in the office was associated with a 2 percent increase in the amount of PFCs in the blood. Should you be worried? "We don't know for sure that being exposed to these chemicals at these concentrations causes health problems, but there is evidence that it might," says lead study researcher Tom Webster, ScD.

PFCs are used in more ways than just as a stain and dirt repellent in office furniture. They're also used to manufacture nonstick cookware, and fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, and even butter wrappers are impregnated with them to keep grease from permeating the packaging. Past studies have linked high levels of the chemicals to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, and to infertility, thyroid problems, and high cholesterol in adults. Not only that, but PFCs applied to furniture emit the carcinogen formaldehyde as they break down. "These studies are not definitive, but they are concerning," Webster adds.

The office environment has really slipped through the cracks in terms of regulations, says Gina M. Solomon, MD, MPH, a senior scientist for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "There aren't any laws or inspections regulating indoor air quality except in very industrial environments," she says.

You also probably don't have much control over your office furniture, the carpeting, or much of anything else in your office. So here are some tips to keep yourself healthy and your office as unpolluted as possible.

HOME HEALTH ARTICLE

Nontoxic Housekeeping:
3 Versatile Natural Cleaners

Getting toxic cleaning products out of your home is one of the smartest, easiest and most practical ways to create a healthier, more eco-friendly home. Many of the chemicals used in conventional cleaning products are bad for human health, and using them actually pollutes the air inside our homes. These cleaners are also a health hazard for children and pets. When we rinse out rags and pour dirty cleaning water or excess cleaners down the drain, those chemicals also go into our waterways, where they are, at best, expensively filtered out at water-treatment facilities and, at worst, leach into area bodies of water, harming wildlife and potentially contaminating drinking water.

These chemical cleaners are simply not necessary. Safe, simple products such as vinegar and baking soda clean and disinfect plenty to create a clean and healthy home, without putting our families’ health and the environment at risk.

Along with being very effective, many natural cleaning products are also incredibly versatile and inexpensive, so your green cleaning arsenal can save you loads of money over the many specialized commercial cleaners on the market. Our web editor Susan Melgren recently put together a few blogs highlighting the verstality of three of the best and most multifunctional items in any green cleaning arsenal: vinegar, baking soda and lemons. Check out some of my favorite uses for these items below, and see how a small group of key items can clean just about every area of your home!

1. VINEGAR

Cut grease. Dip a sponge in vinegar and wipe down ovens, countertops, cooking dishes and fan covers. Disinfect surfaces. Vinegar is your go-to natural disinfectant. Mix 1 part vinegar with four parts water for an all-purpose cleaning solution that will disinfect anything from countertops to doorknobs.

Clean glass. Combine 2 cups water, ¼ cup vinegar and ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a spray bottle to create a natural window cleaner. For a streak-free clean, use newspapers to wipe away grime.

Clean the toilet. Vinegar naturally deodorizes and kills germs. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the toilet and let sit. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda for extra whitening power. Use a toilet brush to remove rings, then flush.

Clean tile grout. Spray a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar onto grout and scrub with an old toothbrush.

Clear drains. Pour ½ cup of baking soda down a clogged drain then follow with a ½ cup of vinegar. Cover the drain to keep fizzing action inside. After the fizzing subsides, follow with a liter or two of boiling water. For very clogged drains, you may need to follow the boiling water by “snaking” the drain with a piece of wire or a straightened wire hanger. If you don’t achieve success the first time, repeat the entire process.
