Day 3
March 7, 2009
Today is Day 3 of the Radio One “One Love Gospel Cruise.” I started my day with the same routine: bathing/cleansing. I ate the same breakfast as yesterday - a nice big plate of watermelon and WITH seeds! It’s a real treat these days when you can find watermelon with seeds. It was nice and sweet.
The ship landed in Belize aroun 12 noon. I chose the tour that took me to see the Belize City and the Belize Zoo. South Belize was a bit depressing to me, seeing the abject poverty and substandard living conditions of all those people. The people in Belize look the people you will see and find in any Black urban area in the United States. Looking at the living conditions in South Belize all I could think about was the words of Harold Acey, and man was Ace so right! The ghettos (Hoods) in America are like a middle class area compared to the ghettos of certain countries.
The one (actually three) common thing I noticed in South Belize was BEER, COCA-COLA, and CHRISTIANITY (CHURCHES). The one thing you can find in any place of the world you travel to is beer and soda pop (American brands). Belize is no exception! They don’t have many commercial billboards but the ones they do all advertise soda pop (Coca Cola, Fanta, Sprite) and credit cards.
Liquor stores and churches dominate South Belize where all the poor people live. Roman Catholicism is the dominate faith there. The have no Western (American) fast food restaurants because the Belizian people can’t afford to purchase the products - a good thing if you look at the situation like I do. Their Subway restaurant just closed down because a sub sandwich was $10 in Belize currency.
After touring South Belize we visited the northern part of the country which was a bit better than the south of the country but in my opinion it wasn’t much better.
Now the land itself is beautiful. There are beautiful mountains, trees, bushes, etc. You will appreciate the natural beauty of Belize. It’s really a beautiful country. The people appear to be very content with life; not tripping on what they lack. They appear to just make the most of what they have.
After about an hour our tour group arrived at the exotic Belize Zoo, a privately funded zoo that houses beautiful, rare, and exotic animals. What I like most about the Belize Zoo is that ALL of the animals are in their natural habitat. I really enjoyed my visit to the Belize Zoo.
One thing’s for sure is that I went to Belize for a reason: to enhance my desire to help fellow humanity around the world via philanthropic endeavors and efforts. Never have I wanted to help people more than now. I simply feel compelled to help people improve their lives and I know the #1 way is to help educate these people followed by monteary contributions.
We arrived back to the ship around 5 p.m. Back on board I went to Deck 9 and ate a very delectable lunch. Cruise ship food is very good (well, at least on Royal Carribean) and if you’re a vegan or vegetarian you can make it. You won’t starve to death! LOL! Because of yesterday’s lecture, I can’t walk around the ship without being noticed (”hey there Mr. Dherbs man!”). I am conversating with so many people and it’s all good because people are becoming conscious about their health which is a good thing. After eating, I conversated with folks some more and then went to my cabin to lie down for a while.
I ate another late dinner (steamed vegetables, garbanzo bean dish, raw vegetable salad) and retired to my cabin and watched “A Patch of Blue” starring Sidney Poiter and Shelly Winters. Great movie! I really enjoyed it. After 3 nights at sea, my sleep has improved and the ship doesn’t rock as much. I sleep with the curtains open which allows me to see the sun rise but also see the waves the ship makes while traveling. It’s a beautiful scene indeed!
