Liver Problems

The liver is the largest internal organ and gland in the human body. The liver is the body's major filtering organ. It's the body's first line of defense pertaining to toxicity.

The liver's main function is to limit the amount of toxins that are entering the human body. Most of the toxins coming into the human body are voluntarily consumed, including:

  • Alcohol consumption
  • Drug use (legal and illegal)
  • Smoking
  • Eating processed foods
  • Ingesting chemicals such as
    • Sugar
    • Salt
    • MSG
    • Aspartame
    • Sodium nitrate
    • Propylene glycol
    • Lake dyes
    • Saccharin
    • And many, many more.

In order to live life optimally you must have a healthy liver.

The liver is credited with over 500 functions. "The liver is divided into four lobes, contains as many as 100,000 lobules, and is served by two distinct blood supplies. The hepatic artery conveys oxygenated blood to the liver, and the hepatic portal vein conveys nutrient-filled blood from the stomach and the intestines. At any given moment the liver holds about one pint of blood or approximately 13% of the total blood supply of the human body." Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 3rd edition, p. 699

Liver Problems

Now, let's take a look at a few common ailments of the liver.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.

"Approximately 300 million people worldwide are infected with the hepatitis C virus. About 3.9 million people in the United States have chronic hepatitis C. This represents about 1.8 percent of the population." E-MedTV

Hepatitis B Statistics In the United States
  • 12 million Americans have been infected (1 out of 20 people).
  • More than one million people are chronically infected .
  • Up to 100,000 new people will become infected each year.
  • 5,000 people will die each year from hepatitis B and its complications.
  • Approximately 1 health care worker dies each day from hepatitis B.
Hepatitis is caused by excess mucus accumulation in and around the liver due to acidity (from consumption of acid-forming food and beverage). When the liver is inflamed, just like every other organ in the body when it becomes inflamed, it becomes enlarged. Hepatitis is mainly caused by poor or insalubrious diet (excess meat and dairy consumption; refined and processed food-stuffs) and intake of drugs, especially pharmaceutical drugs (which include pre-natal pills, which explains why so many American babies are born with hepatitis or jaundice).

Pharmaceutical drugs, unlike Nature's herbs, cause LIVER TOXICITY (liver disease). It's a shame that hospitals (and OBGYN's) have women ingesting toxins under the guise of pre-natal nutrition. Commercial and pharmaceutical grade pre-natal tablets/pills are TOXIC! They are POISONOUS!

Even pharmaceutical grade version of Vitamin C (derived from synthetic ascorbic acid) can cause hepatitis and/or jaundice. Organic Vitamin C derived from botanicals (i.e. Rose Hips, Hibiscus, Amla, Acerola, Camu, etc.) doesn't cause liver disease and the ascorbic acid is organic and beneficial.

Jaundice

Jaundice is a liver disease that causes yellow coloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclerae of the eyes due to greater than normal amounts of bilirubin in the blood. Jaundice is fairly easy to heal. It can be healed by drinking water with lemon juice (from half a lemon) daily. However, hepatic herbs will accelerate the healing of jaundice as well as all other liver or hepatic diseases and disorders.

Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is medically defined as "a chronic degenerative disease of the liver in which the lobes are covered with fibrous tissue, the parenchyma degenerates, and the lobules are infiltrated with fat. Glucogenesis, detoxification of drugs and alcohol, bilirubin metabolism, vitamin absorption, GI function, hormonal metabolism, and other functions of the liver deteriorate. Blood flow through the liver is obstructed, causing back pressure and leading to portal hypertension and esophageal varices. Eventually, unless the cause of the disease is removed, hepatic coma, GI hemorrhage, and kidney failure usually occur." Mosby's supra, p. 262

Liver Fluke Worm

"...the liver fluke is transmitted through the ingestion of raw, dried, salted, pickled, or undercooked fish. Snails, carp, and forty additional species of fish have been known to be intermediate hosts to this fluke. In the human, it inhabits the bile ducts of the liver, causing the liver to become enlarged and tender. It also causes inflammation, chills, fever, jaundice, and a type of hepatitis." Ann Louise Gittleman, "Guess What Came To Dinner: Parasites and Your Health", pgs. 54-55

Melancholy and the Liver

Melancholia, which means "extreme sadness," is the result of the production of black bile from the liver instead of green bile. Many people who drink alcohol become depressed while or after drinking. Intoxicants causes the liver to release black bile and shortly after, extreme sadness or depression follows. I witnessed this activity many times in my mother, maternal aunts, and paternal uncles after drinking devil's brew.

From my personal observations, inebriated people will become either angry or depressed or both while or after drinking alcohol. I just don't understand how people can drink this stuff called alcohol that offers absolutely no health and nutritional benefits whatsoever. The product destroys human life. I don't even understand the casual wine drinker. To me, to be a casual wine drinker is like being a casual urine drinker. It doesn't matter if you are casual with your drinking of an intoxicant. The point is: an intoxicant has no place in the human body.

The Liver and Anger

As every organ houses a negative emotion, the liver houses the negative emotion of anger. Yes, our anger is stored in our liver. Alcoholic beverages cause stored anger in the liver to be released. Inebriated people become angry very fast. It's not so much that it is the liquor (a poisonous substance to man), but the effect of the liquor on the liver or what it causes the liver to do, which is release anger.

Liquor is one of the very well known toxic beverages that humans willfully and gladly consume and to their own detriment. Liquor is more appropriately known as "INTOXICANT." In the word "intoxicant" we have or find the word "toxic." But many people are so messed up mentally, they don't care that they are consuming that which is toxic.

Dietary Intervention

Changing your diet can improve liver health.

Herbs

Great hepatic (herbs with an affinity for the liver) herbs include:
  • Milk Thistle Seed
  • Dandelion Root
  • Boldo Leaf
  • Chanca Piedra
  • Peony Root
  • Quassia Bark
  • Fumitory
  • Gentian Root
  • Bupleurem
  • Fenugreek Seed
  • Goldenseal
  • Barberry
  • Oregon Grape
  • Fringetree Bark
  • Wahoo Bark
  • Chicory
  • Artichoke
  • Tumeric
  • Cascara Sagrada
  • Black Root
Olive Oil

Olive oil also helps the liver. Olive oil pulls toxins from the liver. Olive oil is also a mild chologogue (see Dherbs.com Herbal Glossary) and enhances and increases the natural secretion of bile.

Coffee Enema

Coffee enemas are great for liver cleansing purposes. Coffee when entered via the rectum causes the liver to dump off toxins like a dump truck. The caffeine does not enter the bloodstream like it does when ingested via the mouth when entered through the rectum. A coffee enema can be performed once a month or whenever you feel like performing one. Make sure you use organic coffee beans (which you can find at a good health food store such as Whole Foods Market).

Castor Oil Pack

The castor oil pack application works wonders for cleansing the liver. You take castor oil (which you can warm up if you like), apply it to your skin (above the liver, located on the right side of your body). Next, take some plastic (the kind you get at the dry cleaners - the thin, clear kind) and apply it over the oiled skin. Then, apply a hot pack (preferably a cotton flannel pack) over the plastic. This process works by allowing the castor oil to penetrate the skin and enter into the bloodstream that eventually finds its way to the liver whereby it stimulates cleansing of the tissues of the liver.
